Chester, MA is one of the "hill towns" in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. The road that passes through Chester was the path that pioneers followed across these hills from the Pioneer Valley (Connecticut River Valley) in Massachusetts to the Hudson River Valley in New York and points west; it is known as Jacob's Ladder (present day U.S. Route 20). The weathervane that sits on top of the Chester Town Hall depicts a dog, man carrying a stick, horse and wagon walking in line along a path.
