The O’Brien County Historical Society is located in this former Primghar hotel, now part of the Heritage Park historical village. The society dates back to 1941 but was inactive during the World War II years. Re-established in 1970 with revised by-laws, it is now a non-profit organization.
The building has a sign on it telling that it was the first hotel in Primghar, built in 1863. It was deeded to the O’Brien County Historical Society by the Tom Byers family.
Former residents Harold and Agnes Metcalf donated the land which is now home to the Heritage Park historical village. A total of 11 buildings how contain displays that recall the years-gone-by, that future generations can learn to appreciate their heritage. The village is open to the public, and the buildings are open for special events or by appointment.
