Akron Indiana was founded 30 years after its namesake to the east in Ohio. While the Ohio town started right off with commerce as a byproduct of the canal systems for which it was built, Arkon Indiana was complete wilderness. Settlers picked the crossing of two Indian trails as the spot for this town, no commerce was to be found anywhere unless it was to put up a toll both for the natives.

Had that imaginary tool booth been built though it would have been known as the Newark Tollway! Akron Indiana was originally called Newark as that is where the settlers who founded the town were from. But in 1909 it was incorporated as Akron Indiana after the Ohio town. One thing is fir sure, the early founders were not high on the tree of creativity. That aside, today Akron is a typical small Midwestern town of only about 1,200 people.
