The Soldiers and Sailors Monument honors the Civil War soldiers and sailors from South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, Maine. A 6' high white bronze figure of a Union soldier stands on a 14' by 8' by 8' polished granite base. The soldier stands erect with a rifle turned sideways and held vertically with the rifle butt in front of his right leg. He is holding the barrel of the rifle with both hands , left over right. The uniform includes knee-length jacket, cape, and cap. The multi-tiered base is decorated with crossed cannons, a capstan, and an anchor and rope.
The monument was created by F. H. Thompson, architect. Andrew
Sawyer, was the landscape architect for the project. It was dedicated in 1897.
