In 1939, a memorial was placed in Sítio, near Bico da Memória and the hermitage,
to commemorate the visit of Vasco da Gama to Nazaré.
According to tradition, the brave navegator came in pilgrimage to Our Lady of Nazaré, before
leaving to find the maritime way to India. Here he asked for her protection and switched the large gold necklace
he brought for the beaded necklace that the Virgin carried. It's told that when crossing the Cape of Storms a great
thunderstorm started, endangering ships and men, and the Admiral threw the Lady's beaded necklace to the sea,
which instantly became calm.
After returming to Portugal, D. Vasco da Gama came to Sítio da Nazaré again as a pilgrim to thank the Virgin
for the received graces giving Her a vauable cloak.
