HONDO, New Mexico
A small, unincorporated village, about 5 miles east of Ruidoso, at the junction of the Rio Bonito and Rio Ruidoso rivers. The population is about 1,100. Elevation: 5220 ft. The area is know for growing fruit and there are often fruit stands open in the fall, selling produce.
Original name was La Junta, the area was originally settled by Spanish settlers from the Rio Grande valley in the 1880s, following occupation by the US Army who had entered the area to controll Apache relations.
