The building, on which this mosaic is located, is at the junction of two roads. The mosaic is above the door at the junction. The building is now a restaurant named "The Hill" but was probably a pub in earlier times. The mosaic has the name "Whitbread & Co" near the top and the words "Barley Mow" at the bottom. Whitbreads are a famous brewer and "Barley Mow" is an often used pub name. The picture shows a building with a pile of barley in front of it wih a ladder leaning against the barley. To the right of the ladder, at ground level, is a rake also leaning against the barley.
A barley mow is a stack (mow) of barley; especially barley that was cultivated and then harvested. Barley is a grain that is commonly malted for brewing beer.
The mosaic is made up of tiny, coloured tile pieces but the colours have faded with time. The pieces are about 1cm square.
