The gardens of Versailles have hundreds of sculptures. This one is located along the side of the pool near the Chateau.

This bronze piece is entitled Nymphe et Zephyr. In Greek mythology, Nymphs were considered devine spirits...who lived in mountains and groves and led lifestyles free of the strict moral code demanded of real women at the time. Read more about them at (

Zephyr is the Greek God of the west wind- here represented as a cherub holding a wreath and pointing to the distance. The nymph lies on her side with her right breast revealed. She gazes at the cherub without any particular look and handles some flowers.
The work is dated 1685-1690 and is by Etienne Le Hongre (1628-1690) and Balthasar Keller (1638-1702). Le Hongre worked on numerous projects at Versailles and other sites around Paris as a member of the Bâtiments du Roi. Read more about him at (

Less information is available about Keller other than that he was German.
