Designed in 1909, would only be opened in 1942 at the Palace of Mitra, the City Museum was created in order to document and disseminate the history of Lisbon in the different stages of its evolution.
In 1979 he was transferred to the Palace Pimenta, where it still is installed with a museum program that traces a chronological evolution of the city, since the occupation of the territory during the pre-and proto-history to the Republic Day in 1910, being divided by periods or decisive events in the development of Lisbon.
