The Volunteer is represented by a 7' high bronze sculpture, on a 6' by 3' by 3' marble base, depicting a Spanish American War infantryman. He is wearing period uniform with boots and hat. He is tilting forward above the waist with his left foot in front of his right. A rifle is held horizontally at waist level with his left hand near the barrel and his right hand near the trigger.
Bronze plaques are mounted on the base. The front plaque is decorated with two palm leaves and has lists the names of the men from Marlborough who died during the war. it is inscribed:
