"World War II
December 8, 1941 - August 14, 1945

Deaths 407,316 -- Wounded 670,846

In 1940, Italy joined with the German Army as they prepared an air and ground invasion of Britain. The Germans lost the air battle and Hitler postponed his plans of invasion. In June of 1941 Germany invaded the USSR, and the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. On December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. The U.S. joined with Britain and the USSR. In 1942, Japanese forces seized control of much of eastern Asia and the Islands of the Pacific. In June, Americans stopped the Japanese conquest at the Battle of Midway and began capturing the Islands of the Pacific. In October, the British defeated the German Army in North Africa, and the following month Soviet forces launched a counter-attack at Stalingrad. The German Army surrendered in January 1943. British and American forces landed in Italy in 1943 and took Rome in June of 1944. France was invaded on June 6, 1944. This was known as "D-Day." Allied forces soon reached Paris. In October the U.S. invaded the Philippines. German power finally collapsed in April 1945. Soviet forces captured Berlin and Hitler committed suicide. Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945. In July U.S. forces took Okinawa. The U.S. expected an immense loss of life in the islands if Japan were invaded so two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 14, 1945, and the Japanese government surrendered."
