Figure of Victory – Liverpool, UK - Figurative Public Sculpture on Waymarking.com

It was originally erected after the First World War in memory the company’s employees who were killed in that war. It was later amended to also include the employees who died in the Second World War.

The monument is made up of a Granite pedestal and column with a bronze nude male figure representing Victory standing on a prow of a ship on top of the column. The figure is holding a wreath in one hand and a shield in the other. On his head he has a laurel wreath, and from his neck is suspended a cape round his shoulders.

Because of the connection with the shipping company there are a couple of nautical references. The top of the column is surrounded by shells, and at the front, is an anchor suspended by a rope. In addition 2 ships' prows are attached to the column.

The statue was sculpted by Henry Pagem, with additional mouldings carried out by the Bromsgrove Guild. The granite column was made by John Stubbs and Sons. Before being erected in front of the building it was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts.

It was unveiled by the Earl of Derby in October 1921.
