Mo’s is a long term fixture on the Newport waterfront.
Marker Name: Mo’s Legacy
Marker Text: ”Mo’s” first opened its door in 1946. Mohava Marie Niemi, born in 1913, was a crusty, chain smoking, big hearted, town mother that died in 1992, at the age of 79. Mo left behind a work ethic which still survives within her family today.
Mo loved to tell the story of an early morning accident which a woman crashed her car into the front of “Mo’s” Restaurant. Mo, far from angry, said “Well, we’ll just put in a garage door, so drive in anytime you want.” On nice days this door is still raised creating an instant sidewalk cafe.
Mo’s legacy has expanded on the Oregon Coast to include restaurants in Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Otter Rock, Florence, and two locations on Newport’s bay front. Mo’s “chowder room” produces 500,000 pounds of clam chowder yearly.
