Oregon was not yet a state when the original charter was granted by the Oregon Territorial Legislature to Oregon City College to become the Baptist College at McMinnville. It was renamed in honor of the late Rev. George Fisher Linfield in 1922 when his wife Frances Ross Linfield gave her properties in Spokane, Washington, to the school.

The campus has been enlarged to encompass nearly 200 acres for a park like campus in this rural Oregon town, and a second campus has been added in the city of Portaland, Oregon, for a nursing and health sciences school.

Offering traditional liberal arts education, Linfield College has also placed an emphasis on international study with nearly half of students participating in these programs.

One of the traditions over the years has been the Linfield Speech Contest for area colleges, an annual trek anticipated by all forensic speech teams in the Pacific Northwest.
