When the growing numbers of Architecture students at the School of Fine Arts where becoming excessive for the proper teaching of the course, the University of Porto granted a new location in another parish of the city - Campo Alegre. Álvaro Siza was comissioned with project for the faculty and in 1992 the current premises would be completed.
Although the Architecture course has its roots in The School of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, it has been taught at FAUP for over 20 years, bearing the knowledge of the School of Porto. This movement has been one of the most prominent architecture movements both in Portugal and in the world.
Two Alumni of the school, Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, have been distinguished with the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
