This rest area is located in the Chihuahuan desert about 15 miles north of Socorro, New Mexico, in the land that is now Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge.

The facility features raised platforms, restrooms and individual raised, enclosed picnic facilities. This area is also called "Walking Sands" rest area. There are vending machines and at times, there is a small vendor present, that sells maps.
