Le viaduc de la Sumène est situé sur la ligne de chemin de fer de Bort-les-Orgues à Aurillac dont le tracé a été déterminé par une loi de 1880.
En 1888, l'ingénieur Aubert dresse le projet du viaduc au moins pour la partie métallique qui a été réalisée par la société Commentry Fourchambault.
Le 1er juillet 1893 le tronçon entre Largnac et Mauriac comprenant le viaduc est ouvert à l'exploitation.
Le viaduc est composé de 3 travées de 78 m et de 2 travées de 66 m, sa longueur est de 366 m et sa hauteur de 46 m.
Non rentable, la ligne sera fermée en 1994. Le viaduc est classé Monument Historique le 28 octobre 2006.

The viaduct of Sumène is situated on the railroad line of Bort-les-Orgues to Aurillac whose plan was determined by a law of 1880.
In 1888, the engineer Aubert draws up the project of the viaduct at least for the metallic part which was realized by the company Commentry Fourchambault.
On July 1st, 1893 the section between Largnac and Mauriac including the viaduct is opened to the exploitation.
The viaduct consists of 3 spans of 78 m and 2 spans of 66 m, its length is 366 m and its height of 46 m.
Unprofitable, the line will be closed in 1994. The viaduct is classified as "Historic Monument" on October 28th, 2006.
