The St. Louis Colored Orphans' Home was established in 1888 by a group of prominent women who aroused community concern for the welfare of neglected and orphaned children. In 1919 Annie Malone a prominent African-American businesswoman became president of the board of directors for the St. Louis Colored Orphans' Home. It was a result of her generosity and vision that the home was built in its current location. Even though Annie Malone relocated to Chicago in 1930, she remained president of the board of directors until 1943. The home was renamed in her honor in 1946. The building constructed in 1922 was designed William B. Ittner in a Colonial Revival design.
