As ever the excellent UKNIWM has supplied all the info below, follow the link for more detailed information.

No names just the following text:

1914 1918
1939 1945

A TRIBUTE TO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF CROYDON WHO DIED AND SUFFERED

In 1997 the following phrase was added:

AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WARS AND CONFLICTS SINCE

A little about the Cenotaph itself:

There are two sculptures on the Cenotaph.
On the left is a soldier of the East Surrey Regiment tying a bandage around his wounded arm with his rifle behind him.
On the right is a woman with one arm outstretched whilst holding a child.
Both figures are made in bronze and in very good condition.
The Cenotaph itself is 9m high and 2.5m wide and constructed of stone.
On top of the Cenotaph is a metal (presumably bronze) Latin cross, as this is 9m above ground level I cannot state this is in good condition but will presume it is.

The memorial was erected on 22 Oct 1921 and unveiled by Lord Ashcombe at a cost of £5000.

To be honest the memorial looks like someone has pinched the top half. It definitely looks like it once had a large cross above it.
I’m not used to finding “Cenotaphs”!

At a height of 9m I’m sure that this would be very impressive in any other location. However being located at the base of the Clocktower it is dwarfed somewhat. It is a very nice location though with the old Town Hall, sculpture of Queen Victoria and of course the famous old clocktower all within a stone’s throw.
