When travelling north on Route 1 you will see the Big Indian (aka Chief Passamaquoddy) as you enter Freeport. This huge epoxy resin and fiberglass sculpture is supported by steel angle irons or rods, chicken wire, wooden braces and guy wires. It has been greeting visitors to Freeport since 1969.
A 40' by 15' figure of an Indian is standing upright on a rectangular concrete base. The Indian is dressed in pants and shirt with decorated with sky blue and red designs. He is wearing moccasins and an ornate floor-length headdress with black, red and blue designs. He is holding a feathered spear vertically in his right hand and a thunder-bird design shield in front of him in his left hand.
The Big Indian was created by the team of sculptors: Rodman Shutt (lead sculptor), Julian Leslie and Mike Leslie. It was commissioned by Julian Leslie in 1968 to promote the Casco Bay Trading Post and installed in 1969.
