L.L. Bean superstore is the premier attraction of Freeport. It draws almost three million visitors each year. Around it has grown a major shopping venue. Over 200 outlet stores, designer shops, Bed and breakfast's, hotels, restaurants and cafes surround the Main Street (Route 1) in Freeport.
The giant boot is the iconic symbol of this L.L. Bean Superstore. It greets visitors as they enter the entrance in the center of the store on the southwest side of the main building.
The giant boot is a 16.5 feet high by 7.5 feet wide representation of a L.L. Beans signature, waterproof Maine hunting shoe. The boot stands upright. It has seven rows of laces which are untied and hang down on both side of the boot from an eight set of eyelets. The boot is made of painted wood and is supported by an interior steel brace. It is set on black paving stones in a brick plaza on the left side of the entrance.
