The foot prints stand in the Darwin Gardens, Millennium Green which were created to celebrate the millennium.
Darwin stayed nearby here whilst writing ‘The Origin of the Species’ and he theme of the gardens is time inspired both by evolution and the millennium celebrations. It is therefore appropriate to have a sundial in the gardens. There is a time related plaque near the footsteps that states TIME WAS – TIME IS – TIME IS YET TO BE. NOW TAKE YOUR STAND UPON ETERNITY
What makes the sundial really fun is that you become part of it as you stand on the footsteps and become a human gnomon (the vertical bar on a horizontal sundial).
The central stone on which you stand, and stones to mark the hours are all set into the grass.
If you visit these gardens the footsteps are just waiting for you to stand on them – go on you know you want to.
