Recreational piers were a Victorian creation. Often, they jutted out to sea supported by a steel and wooden framework. Morecambe's pier is a little different though, it is known locally as the 'stone pier'. There was originally a traditional pier at the west end of the town, but it was destroyed by storms.
The sign however, illustrates a traditionally structured pier.
