Originally the Everyman Theatre was known as the New Theatre and Opera House, it first opened its doors on 1 October 1891. It enjoyed various ups and downs as the years went by, particularly during the war as Cheltenham escaped the bombing, but London Theatres were closed.
After the war, competition from cinema meant that the theatre struggled, and it closed in 1959. In 1960, however, it was reopened under the name of the Everyman, having been resurrected by a group of local townspeople.
The theatre is still going strong to this day, featuring a number of touring productions. There have been various refurbishments over the years to keep the theatre pristine, most recently in 2011.
