Die Modelleisenbahn des ESV-Innsbruck Sektion Modellbau ist eine Anlage mit wechselhafter Geschichte. Die ersten Mitglieder der neu gegründeten Sektion begannen schon im Jahre 1958 mit dem Bau ihrer Anlage am Innsbrucker Hauptbahnhof in der alten Remise 2, in der Kantine im ersten Stock untergebracht.
1962 musste die Anlage wegen Gebäudeumbauten in den Keller der Bundesbahndirektion (dem heutigen Standort) übersiedelt werden.
Dies kam praktisch einen Neubeginn gleich, da die Anlage zur Übersiedelung komplett abgebaut werden musste. Lediglich ein Viadukt im heutigen mittleren Anlagenteil (über dem Güterbahnhof) wurde aus der alten Anlage übernommen und wieder eingebaut.
Damals war der heutige Anlagenraum 1 zugleich auch Werkstätte und Klubraum. Entsprechend schwierig gestaltete sich durch diese engen Platzverhältnisse auch der Aufbau. Es wurden ja nicht nur Gleise verlegt und Landschaften gebaut, auch alle Weichen wurden in Handarbeit selbst hergestellt (sie funktionieren heute noch einwandfrei!) bzw. die Steuerung und Steuerpult entwickelt und gebaut. Erst später wurde den Verein ein zweiter Raum zur Verfügung gestellt. Er beinhaltet heute den großen Abstellbahnhof (Anlagenraum 2). Erst Jahre später kamen Räume für Werkstätte und Vereinslokal hinzu.
