The film revolves around the fantasy world of an inventor, Caractacus Potts, his two children and a sweet tycoon’s daughter, Truly Scrumptious. Potts’ children persuade him to buy their favourite plaything, an old jalopy of a car. This he does and restores it to health, calling it Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a car with magical properties. The Potts family and Truly take a picnic at the sea side and Caractacus tells the children a story about a far away kingdom of Vulgaria. In Vulgaria children are imprisoned and the ruthless Baron Bombast tries to steal Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Obviously Caractacus and the car eventually defeat the Baron and order is restored
Whilst the Potts family home is Ibstone windmill, above Turville, the nearest town in the film is Hambleden. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang drives through Hambleden on the way from the windmill to the picnic at the seaside.
