From 1935 to 1942 the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed most of the infrastructure in the Blitzen Valley, operating from three camps, Camp Sod House, Camp Buena Vista, and Camp Five Mile RF-1. The first major project was the construction of the Refuge Headquarters which included six permanent structures. The buildings were made with “rubble construction” (chiseled stone) quarried from the Blitzen Valley. The Sod House Camp was located at the Refuge Headquarters. This building was one of the residence buildings built by the CCC’s and now serves as the Headquarters Office and Visitor Center.
