The Rochdale Canal was the first canal built to cross the Pennines to connect Lancashire with Yorkshire.
It was completed in 1804 and connected Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire with Manchester in Lancashire. It has a total of 91 locks within its distance of 32 miles.
The milestone is next to lock 38, the 2nd highest lock on the canal and is 14 miles from Sowerby Bridge and 18 miles from Manchester. It lies just to the south of the summit lock.
