William McMurray established a wintering post on the North West shore of Jackfish Lake in 1857.
A geologist, James Hector spent the night of December 17, 1857. En route to Fort Edmonton, they spent the evening talking and playing on the violin.
The post consisted of a leather lodge, and storage hut which had been augmented by two-roomed cabin when Hector returned on April 1, 1858.
He found John Sullivan and James Beads of the expedition wintering there, and on April 4 returned with them to Fort Carlton.
