Located in Venango county just outside of Titusville PA. Col. Drake's Well stands 49' high and is made of wood. The Well stands in roughly the same spot it did when it was drilled although what you see now is a replica that houses an engine that was used at the time the Well was drilled. Oil was struck at 69 1/2' on August 27th 1859. Most people do not realize that the date (month and day)are also the first three digits (not the area code)of any Titusville phone number 8-2-7.
The folks who run the museum have a diagram in there offices that shows the size and placement of every board in the well house. The hole in the ground inside the house is the same hole that Drakes well came out of and started the modern oil era.
