Wat Phnom, which translates as temple on a hill or temple hill, according to legend, was the founding point of the city of Phnom Penh. According to this legend it was grandmother Penh who found a statue of the Buddha in the Mekong River and then instructed the locals to create this hill, from which the city grew. Wat Phnom is revered in the city and in Cambodia.
As one would expect, there more than a few lions on the hill, acting as guardians to the wat. On the main set of steps leading to the wat there are intermixed guardian demons and guardian lions.
