In 1878, the post was renamed Fort Douglas. The fort was officially closed in 1991 and most of the buildings turned over to the University of Utah. A small section of the original fort is used by the Army Reserve and includes the Fort Douglas Military Museum.
The Fort (initially a simple camp) was established during the Civil war. During the Civil War it served as the headquarters for the District of Utah. Fort Douglas grew in importance with the Union Pacific and Union Pacific connection at Promontory Summit. During WWI the fort was used as an interment camp for Germans living in the US, as well as a POW camp for naval personnel. During WWII it became an Armny Air Field for B-17's. After the war, the Army began divesting it's land, when in 1991 all buildings were turned over to the Universtity of Utah.
