The sign reads:

"Port Gibson Historic Tour
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
609 Church. 1859-60 Romanesque Revival. This church with the hand pointing to heaven is the most famous building in Claiboorne County. The original hand of gilded wood was carved by young Daniel Foley."

The original hand was carved around the time the church was built. Unfortunately, being made of wood it deteriorated with time, and around 1901 the present hand replaced it. It was taken down in 1998, repaired and replated with gold.
