A youthful Carl Von Linneaus wearing a waistcoat, knickers, shoes with large center buckles, and a hip-length shirt with pockets. He gazes at a leafy plant held in his proper left hand. The thumb of his proper right hand is extended, his arm tensed with excitement. His wavy, chin-length hair is swept back from his face. He stands with feet spread apart, a small female "muse" of inspiration behind him, rising out of a group of flowers. The muse is swathed in swirling drapery, her proper left hand extended up, palm out, her proper right hand held to her temple. The sculpture is surrounded by dense foliage and trees.
Donated by Thomas Butler in commemoration of the bicentennial of Carl Linnaeus' death, this bronze sculpture stands in a garden outside the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. This is a very fitting place for a statue of Linnaeus because it relates to much of his life's work.
