Em finais do século XIX, inícios do século XX, implantou-se nas margens do rio Arade um dos grandes centro industriais conserveiros do país, constituído pelas fábricas de Portimão, do Parchal, Ferragudo e Mexilhoeira. Relacionada com o incremento que a pesca da sardinha conhece, pelo menos desde o século XVI, e a importância que a sua comercialização assume nas rotas de comércio marítimo, sobretudo com o exterior, esta indústria nasce das formas mais rudimentares de alguns métodos de conservação do pescado, desde a Antiguidade utilizados pelas populações marítimas e que numa primeira fase se processou de acordo com 3 princípios: secagem, salga e fumagem. É neste contexto de conservação, nomeadamente do pescado, que o sal e a instalação de salinas em Portimão adquirem importância fundamental, remontando a sua existência a 1483, altura em que, o então senhor da vila, D. Gonçalo Vaz de Castelo Branco é autorizado por Dom João II, a construir umas marinas no Sapal. Estas, juntamente às de Alvor, por volta de 1600, abasteciam Lagos e exportavam para Espanha, Itália e Grécia.
