Aberdeen City Council has made a commitment to supporting Fair Trade and Fairtrade products.
They were declared a Fairtrade City in 2004, the first city in Scotland to achieve this.
Fairtrade City status is granted by the Fairtrade Foundation, the UK Fairtrade licensing organisation.
Aberdeen City Council passed a resolution of support for Fairtrade in 2003 and it now serves Fairtrade coffee and tea in most of its canteens. Fairtrade is also being introduced into other Council run cafes.
The list of local shops and cafés which stock Fairtrade products has continued to grow. There are now over 3000 Fairtrade products to choose from and cotton, the newest commodity to be awarded the Mark, offers the possibility of many more outlets being able to offer Fairtrade goods.
A large number of local work places, community organisations and churches across the City use Fairtrade products. The University of Aberdeen was also granted Fairtrade status in its own right in 2007.
A local Fairtrade Working Group, with representation from the council, businesses and the voluntary sector, meets regularly to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade City status.
