Quoting from the information board at the site.

                     MEDUSA
             The Heights of Abraham
          ran a competition for schools
            to design a 'Totem' pole
          positioned beside High Falls.

          The winning entries were from
                three pupils from
          St.Joseph's School of Matlock
              who submitted designs
            based on Greek Mythology.

             The finished sculpture
             in an interpretation of
               these three designs.
 
             Medusa, a Sea Serpent
               and a Greek warrior.

          Medusa fixes her deadly gaze
             out towards the world,
             she commands her ally
            the sea serpent, coiled
          protectively around her body,
            to slowly crush our poor
                 Greek warrior.

The totem is carved from timber using a chainsaw, angle grinder & power file and was made by Andrew Frost, dated 11th October, 2000. For more pictures of Andrew's carvings see Andrew Frost
