Hocking Valley Coal Company Town Historic District - The Plains, OH - U.S. National Register of Historic Places on Waymarking.com

Built by the Hocking Valley Coal Company between 1900 and 1902, the town sits atop what was the Eclipse Mine #4, and hence the name it is now know by, The Eclipse Company Town and Store. When it was operating, there was the mine and associated structures, the tipple, company store and company houses for the miners.

The mine operated until the 1930's when it closed. During WW II it was reopened, and operated until 1948 when it closed for good. Thanks to five friends who came together to save and restore what remained of the town, today the town is comprised of twelve company houses, one shotgun house, and the company store, on approximately 17 acres.
