The Wistariahurst was once owned by William Skinner, a prominent Holyoke silk merchant. On the Cabot Street entrance a pair of sculpted marble lions, resting on a granite bases, flank the stairway leading to the museum.

The Sleeping Lion is on the east side if the stairway. The lion is 25" by 18" by 61" and rest on a 50" high granite base. The male lion is apparently sleeping with its head resting on his right front paw. His left paw is stretched out over the base.

The sculpture is a small scale reproduction of a lion located outside the tomb of Clement XIII at St. Peter's in Vatican City. The reproduction, created by an unknown sculptor, was purchased by Sarah Skinner in Rome in the 1880's.
