Fundado em 1283, por D. Mor Dias, o Mosteiro de Santa Clara de Coimbra foi entregue às freiras clarissas pouco depois. Dona Isabel de Aragão, a Rainha Santa Isabel, interessou-se pelo convento, entretanto extinto, e mandou construir novos edifícios em estilo gótico, de que se destacam o claustro e a igreja, sagrada em 1330.
O Mosteiro cedo foi palco das inundações provocadas pelo rio Mondego e alvo de adaptações arquitectónicas a esta circunstância. Finalmente em 1677 e as freiras mudaram-se para um novo edifício, construído num lugar mais elevado, passando o primitivo a ser chamado Santa Clara-aVelha.
Depois de um amplo projecto de valorização este Monumento Nacional e Sítio Arqueológico (Séculos XIV – XVII), passou a dispor de um Centro Interpretativo. O percurso do visitante engloba visita às ruínas, exposição de espólio arqueológico conventual, exibição de filmes e modelação virtual.

This convent was founded in 1283 by the Abbess Dona Mor Dias, and given to Clarisse nuns shortly afterwards. Dona Isabel of Aragon, the Queen St Isabel, took an interest in the convent and had a new church built in Gothic style, consecrated in 1330.
The site of the convent proved a bad choice, due to flooding from the River Mondego nearby. The old convent was abandoned in 1677 and the sisters moved uphill to a new building.
National Monument site (14th–17th centuries). Interpretation centre, with visit to the ruins, exhibition of archaeological finds from the convent, films and virtual models. Guided visits. Shop and cafeteria with terrace. Disabled access.
