This drinking fountain was erected in 1897 to celebrate the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign.

The fountain originally had 3 separate fountains, one for horses, one for dogs, and one for humans.

In the days of horse transport it was common to provide drinking fountains for horses though this one is particularly ornate. It has not worked for many years and now holds decorative flower baskets. It became a grade II listed building on 29th January 1985, the English Heritage listing reference is 135686.

At the top along each side is lettering describing the fountain’s history and its use. On one side there is a badly weathered human head, and on another is a horse’s head.
