On this unmaintained and over-grown site you can find the gravestones of William Henry Barber, his wife Samantha Ellen Harris, Mary Augusta Langford and several other Barbers, Langfords and Davidsons who settled and farmed here from the early 1800's on.
The site was part of a farm, located in what was then a sparcely populated agricultural area. It was abandoned in the 1980s when the surrounding land was sold to the developer Brigil. The old family farmhouse burned in 1981. The former farm is now the site of a fire station, a Metro supermarket, a Hydro-Québec substation, and hundreds of homes.
According to the head of the local genealogy society, the Barbers weren't prominent. They were, however, solid citizens with an interest in public service. Three family members served on the Templeton municipal council over the years, and they gave land to be used for a church and a school.
The family that owns this cemetery has moved on without a trace. Since no identifiable person is in charge of it, the city cannot take charge of it or grant it heritage status. Brigil, who owns the surrounding land, has said it's willing to become a partner in restoring the cemetery.
