Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary contains the oldest stands of white pine in Michigan. The white pine is the official State Tree of Michigan, and once there were seemingly endless forests of them. The trees here are up to 600 years old, and the ring on display dates from the time Columbus sailed to the New World, so 500 years ago. It was cut down in 1971, the time the sanctuary was created to save these last few trees. The ring is displayed in a wooden information case where the trail begins at the parking area.
