This chimney is part of the old steam house to used to exist in Woolwich Dockyard. Funds were raised to build it in 1837 and it appeared on a plan of the steam house in 1843. The adjoining boiler house was demolished in 1982. The listed structure stands 180 feet high and is octagonal in section. It is built from stock bricks.

The chimney base is on private land but can be viewed fro the entrance gate as seen in the photos. One side of the chimney forms part of the southern boundary wall of a small industrial area.
