There are many pubs called The Chequers and they are usually close to old market places. I do not think that there was a market place here.
There is a train of thought that a sign with chequers on it, might indicate that there were games to be played inside. It is believed that the Romans brought chequers, or drafts, here. More recently, and probably more relevant in this case, is the habit in past times, of pubs being the place where a money table, was located, where an exchequer, would settle accounts. It may have also indicated that the proprietor of the pub might be prepared to loan or exchange money.
However, chequers as heraldic device did appear on the Fitzwarren coat of arms. During the reign of Edward VI, the Fitzwarrens had the right to licence pubs.
This is a Greene King pub but it looks as though the sign was painted at a time when they employed a proper artist.
