This two-piece relief is set on a wall in St. Patrick's Cathedral near a bust of Pope John Paul II. The larger piece depicts Bosco holding a Bible in his right hand while blessing a kneeling boy with his left. The smaller piece dpicts a group of people...presumably Bosco with his students. The accompanying plaque reads:
"SAINT JOHN BOSCO
FATHER, TEACHER, AND
FRIEND OF THE YOUNG."
Bosco (1815-1888) was canonized in 1934. He founded the Salesian Order which seeks to help poor children through acts of charity. His method was unique in the Catholic Church since it relied on prevention rather than punishment. He is the patron saint of magicians. Read more about him at (
