THE SHIP IN HER HEYDAY
A great opening season check out dive after the surface of the waters here have re-liquified after the winter.
The steamer Conestoga was built by Quale & Son of Cleveland for the Anchor Line and launched July 6, 1878. At 242 feet long, 16 feet deep with a gross tonnage of 1,226 tons and powered by a steeple compound engine she was capable of a speed of 8 knots. On May 22, 1922, outside Lock 28 of the Old Galop Canal, fire broke out in the engine room while she awaited passage through the lock. The ship briefly drifted and sank at this present location. She was carrying 30,000 bushels of wheat which was salvaged.
SHORE VIEW OF HER FINAL RESTING PLACE
The steam engine being at the stern, the bow points upriver and is slightly closer to shore.
