A young miner strides forward, carrying a pick in his proper left hand and a lunch pail in his proper right hand. He wears a short jacket and a lantern helmet. The sculpture is mounted on a boulder in the middle of a triangular traffic island planted with flowers.

The sculpture was funded by the Houghton-Hancock Business and Professional Women's Club and the Michigan Council for the Arts. A Miner's Ball raised $4,000 for the sculpture project. The sculpture stands as a tribute to miners who settled the area known as Copper Country.
