Sitting on the west bank of the Mekong River, the city and province of Mukdahan abuts Laos. A city with a history, Mukdahan (Muk) has a number of early temples and other structures within its borders.
One of these is Wat Si Bun Rueang (Ban Tai), located near the Mekong, to the south of the city centre. The principal feature of the Wat is a bronze Buddha statue named Phra Phutthasing Song, which is 1 metre wide and 1.2 metres high. According to the foundation story of the city, this statue was taken from the capital city of Laos, Vientiane, (which from time to time was under Siamese rule), and placed in Muk. The remainder of the Wat follows the usual Thai design, however, there is a small, artificial lake towards the rear of the temple and a larger chedi next to this.
A rather attractive Wat, worth a visit if you are in the vicinity.
