Construction of the Gothic style Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and was completed over 600 years later in 1880. Its famous twin spires are 515 feet high. Upon completion it was the tallest structure in the world. The cathedral is probably one of the most easily recognized and visited landmarks in Germany, hosting thousands of visitors daily. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to tradition, Archbishop Rainald von Dassel brought the relics of the Magi, who visited Jesus in Bethlehem, to Cologne in 1164. The cathedral was built to hold these relics and as a place of pilgrimage. The remains are held in a large gold sarcophagus, the Shrine of the Three Kings, which dates back to the 13th century.
Cologne Cathedral is in the center of the industrial city of Cologne. During World War II the cathedral sustained damage from aerial bombardment. Reconstruction began soon after the war. This semi-postal stamp was issued by Germany in 1948; the surcharge was for its reconstruction.
